HELP HELP BUDGETING TIPS!!

January 26th, 2009 at 11:22 pm

Can anyone give me any type of Tips for creating a good household budget. Please forgive me for not knowing this. I still have a lot to learn but from reading you guys are great. What tips would you advise??? I currently I make about $38,000 per year.I know this is sad but believe me my parents never taught me the budgeting basics. Nor did I ever learn it in school but now I'm out in the "real world" trying to figure things out on my own.

You need to know your monthly income and your monthly expenses. Determine how much you want to save also. Assign a budget to your expenses and try your best to not spend more than you assigned. It helps to know what your spending patterns are like. Track your spending either in a notebook or in a software program and then go from there. Don't forget to include semi-annual and annual expenses like car insurance, car registrations, property taxes, etc. Good luck. Budgeting is an ongoing process and takes time to develop. It won't be perfect the first go around.

I feel your pain. I never learned how to budget either from my parents. I have made great progress since November since I started blogging here. I use Quicken to keep track of everything. I enter all the known expenses at least a month in advance. I have my paychecks entered so I know where I stand a month from now. I have also learned to judge the gas and grocery usage. I enter amounts for them from each paycheck. My biggest problem is unexpected expenses(like the cheerleading competition this weekend). I now enter money from each paycheck or unexpected events. i make adjustments to my budget almost daily.(a little obsessive but what can I say.) My budget is a still a work in process as yours will be. You have to find something that works for you! Good Luck!

Buy a little pad and write down everything you spend no matter how small for about a month. Items like rent or mortgage, insurance, etc are pretty standard.

Everyone is different in their spending habits and you may need to set up items in the budget that are unique to you. After a month you can see where your money is going and make categories you feel comfortable with and that make sense to you.

Writing down every penny you spend also lets you know where your money is going!WinkSmile

yes i agree, write down everything you spend. it will be hard at first but you will get used to it. I can now remember what i spend for a whole week, in my head, without writing it down. I have tracked my spending for nearly 2 years.
use google and search for budgets, or look at everyone else's here to see what you might compare to. figure out if you want to do it weekly, fortnightly or monthly and the easiest way is to use an excel spreadsheet. good luck!
